Apocrita is a suborder that is distinguished from the earlier branching symphytans (sawflies) by their narrow “wasp-waist.” The ancestral state of Apocrita is thought to be that of parasitism, and the narrow waist an adaptation to that lifestyle. Within chalcids the majority of genomic data available are for species in the Pteromalidae, which is a large polyphyletic group of parasitoids
