Phylogenetic tree of the BtaA domain of the BTA1 protein from SAR representatives (diatoms, eustigmatophytes), Haptophytes, Cryptophytes, Mamiellales, Choanoflagellates, alveolates, fungi, bryophytes, charophytes, Chlorophyceae, and bacteria. The tree presented was inferred by Bayesian analysis as described in the “Methods” section and the topology overlaps Maximum Likelihood tree topology. Bayesian Posterior Probability (BPP) values below 0.90 are reported at each node. The color of the clades and branches identifies the habitat as validated by the bibliographic survey. Dark blue = seawater; light blue = freshwater; red: terrestrial; orange: brackish water. At each internal node, the BPP for the habitat of the ancestor is indicated besides the sign if below 1.00. On the right-hand side, the configuration of the protein is reported; red: BtaA domain; blue: BtaB domain
